XABI ALONSO is poised to line up in the Liverpool midfield for the derby double-header later this month after fears over a long-term absence were allayed yesterday.
But the Spaniard remains a major doubt for Saturday’s Premier League visit to struggling Stoke City.
Alonso was forced off at half-time during the weekend FA Cup win at Preston North End after colliding with a defender in the closing moments of the first half.
The midfielder required seven stitches in a cut to his right foot and concern was raised when he left Deepdale wearing a foot brace.
But Alonso was assessed at Melwood yesterday and, while there is extensive bruising to the foot, the Spaniard has suffered no fracture or ligament damage.

Thank god there's no breaks then yes?
Liverpool are waiting on news of the injury to Xabi Alonso, who needed seven stitches in his foot during Saturday's 2-0 FA Cup victory against Preston.
The midfielder was taken off at the end of the first half and he was later seen on the bench wearing a protective boot.
Liverpool assistant manager Sammy Lee said: "We do not know the full extent of the injury, apart from the fact he will be very sore.
"Hopefully there will be no damage but we won't know for 24 to 48 hours."

The best trainer is Sami Hyypia. He's 35 but he still trains better than those come up from the reserves.
The worst trainer has to be Jermaine Pennant. He doesn't even lace his boots when he trains so he can't train very well!

LONDON (AFP) — Rafael Benitez believes Xabi Alonso can inspire Liverpool to win the Premier League title just months after the Spain international came close to leaving the club.
Alonso almost left Anfield in the summer as Benitez desperately sought to raise funds to finance the arrival of Aston Villa's Gareth Barry.
Juventus were among a number of clubs strongly linked to the midfielder but the Barry deal failed to materialise and Alonso remained at Anfield.
He has proved a key figure during Liverpool's charge to the Premier League summit and Alonso once again in influential form as Benitez's side won 2-0 at Bolton on Saturday to keep the pressure on Chelsea, their nearest title rivals, thanks to goals by Dirk Kuyt and Steven Gerrard.

Rafa Raves Over Revitalised Alonso
Liverpool manager Rafael Benitez has heaped praise upon midfield maestro Xabi Alonso, suggesting that his fellow Spaniard is approaching career-best form...
Xabi Alonso was man-of-the-match as the Reds romped to a 2-0 win against Bolton Wanderers yesterday afternoon. His silky passing opened up the game early on, but his defensive nous proved just as valuable when the Trotters pressed forward during the second half.
It is amazing to think that the Basque playmaker would not still be wowing Premier League crowds with his majestic 65-yarders if Juventus had been willing to meet Liverpool's asking price during the summer, or if Gareth Barry had made his long-expected switch from Aston Villa to Anfield.
